MySpace Opens up Profile Data

MySpace has announced a data-sharing program with several other internet user communities.

Social networking site MySpace today announced a "Data Availability" program in which it will make available the profile data of its members to other partner sites. Initial partners include Yahoo, eBay, Twitter, and Photobucket.

Users can opt to connect their MySpace data with their accounts at any of these sites, adding all the social context of their MySpace profile to the experience at these other sites. MySpace will not be allowing other sites to store user data from MySpace users, but will be providing partner site administrators the tools to tap into MySpace profile data, including friends, favorite music, photos and video.

MySpace rival Facebook has been gaining ground on MySpace, but MySpace still has far more users than Facebook. Today's move could potentially generate some new interest in using MySpace as a central location for social data - sort of a one-stop-shop for keeping social data updated.
